Step 1: Secure Learner's Permit

The first step to getting your driver's license in NYS is to secure a learner permit. This requires passing a written test based on the NYS Driver's Manual, covering rules of the road, safe driving principles, and road signs. You'll need to provide proof of age, identity, and residency in NYS, along with passing an eye test.

Step 2: NYS Pre-Licensing Course

After obtaining your learner permit, you must complete a Pre-Licensing Course, also known as the 5-hour course. This course teaches you about driving laws, safe driving strategies, and the responsibilities of being a driver. You'll receive a certificate of completion, which is required to schedule your road test.

Step 3: Get Practice Behind the Wheel

With your learner permit and completion of the Pre-Licensing Course, you're now ready to practice driving. It's crucial to gain experience in different driving conditions and hone your skills behind the wheel. NYS requires learners under 18 to complete at least 50 hours of supervised driving, including 15 hours at night, before taking the road test.

Step 4: Complete Road Test

The final step is the road test, where you'll demonstrate your driving skills, including starting, stopping, parallel parking, and driving through intersections. You must bring a registered, insured vehicle to the test. Passing the road test earns you your driver's license.
